They are distinguished by sight by being small whitish crystals. The appearance results from the infiltration of moisture into the wall, due to cracked walls or by capillarity \u2013 rising humidity inside the walls from the ground \u2013 also known as rising humidity.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Saltpeter should be removed dryly, by sanding or brushing.
